When life gets hard, it’s easy to fall back into old patterns, to seek comfort in the familiar rather than press forward in faith. This is exactly what the early Jewish Christians struggled with—some were tempted to return to the priesthood of Aaron. But the book of Hebrews reminds us of a profound truth: Jesus has a superior ordination—one that is eternal, unshakable, and grounded in divine authority.
A Priesthood Like No Other
Long before Aaron, there was a foreshadowing of something greater. In 1 Samuel 13, Saul is rebuked for assuming a priestly role not appointed to him. In Numbers 16, Korah’s rebellion illustrates the danger of stepping outside God’s ordained structure. And in 2 Chronicles 26:16–21, King Uzziah is struck with leprosy for offering incense in the temple, a duty reserved only for priests.
Each of these accounts points to one critical truth: Only the right person in the right place can offer the right sacrifice.
In the Old Covenant, Aaron was chosen by God to stand in the gap for the people, offering sacrifices for sin. But even Aaron had to atone for himself before he could atone for others: motivation want to play I don’t know how to

“Then he shall take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. This shall be a statute forever to you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all… For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord.” — Leviticus 16:23–30
Even with such structure, the Old Covenant system could only cover sins, not remove them.
Jesus: The Forever Priest
Enter Jesus—the fulfillment of all that the old priesthood pointed toward. In Hebrews 5, we find that Jesus is not only called but begotten by the Father:
“You are My Son, today I have begotten You.” — Hebrews 5:5, NKJV
“You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” — Hebrews 5:6, NKJV
These two declarations are rich with eternal weight. No earthly priest was ever called “forever,” but Jesus holds His priesthood eternally, not because of lineage but because of His resurrection. He was not ordained by man, but by God Himself, from a line that predates even Aaron.
“Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedienc go and be with so she’s not alonee by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” — Hebrews 5:8–9, NKJV
This is not just a theological doctrine—it is hope for every believer.
The Sacrifice that Speaks
Jesus did not go to the cross as a sinner—He went as the sin-bearer.
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21, NKJV
When Jesus intercedes for us, He does not plead innocence—He pleads blood. He says to the Father, “I died for that sin.” This is what gives us eternal salvation, not merely a temporary covering.
Don’t Drift Back—Stay Anchored in Christ
The comparison between Aaron and Jesus was necessary because people were tempted to return to the old ways—to seek comfort in what was familiar. But the writer of Hebrews warns:
“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” — Hebrews 2:1, NKJV
Like them, we are often tempted to go back to what’s easy, to sin patterns that felt secure or to religious rituals that lack power. But Jesus calls us higher. He is not only our High Priest—He is our hope.
