The Bible teaches us that the heart is central to our spiritual life. Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander” (Matthew 15:19). Our sins are not just external—they originate from the heart. For this reason, having a heart that is right with God is essential.
The Blindness of the Heart
Human hearts are naturally prone to deception. Jeremiah warns, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Our hearts can prioritize worldly things, idolize possessions, people, or ambitions, and drift away from God. This blindness of the heart can harden us to God’s voice and prevent us from fully receiving His grace.
The Weight and Condition of Our Hearts
God examines the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us: “The Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” He weighs our hearts, not for condemnation, but to reveal their readiness to receive Him. We may wonder, “Am I worthy? Is my heart enough?” Yet God calls us to surrender, acknowledging our insufficiency, and asking Him to prepare our hearts.

A Heart Open to the Holy Spirit
God desires to give us a new heart and a new spirit: “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26). Through repentance and confession, we can receive Christ by faith. Acts 3:19 encourages, “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.”
To have a heart right with God, we must:
- Repent of sin – Recognize and turn from what is wrong.
- Receive Christ by faith – Believe He is Lord and Savior.
- Confess Him before men – Publicly acknowledge Him (Romans 10:9-10).
- Be led by the Holy Spirit – Allow God to guide our thoughts, desires, and actions.
A heart attuned to God is humble, aware of its dependence on Him, and sensitive to the Spirit. When our hearts are rightly aligned, we experience true life, peace, and freedom in Christ.
