Moses Led, But Jesus Redeemed: Discover Why One is Superior

The Bible contains many powerful messages about the nature and work of Jesus Christ. One of the most profound statements about His superiority is found in Hebrews 3:1-6. Here, the author of Hebrews draws a clear contrast between Jesus and Moses, highlighting that while Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s house, Jesus is the Son of God and the builder of the house. This distinction is crucial because it speaks not only to Jesus’ divine nature but also to the complete fulfillment of God’s promises.

“Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.” (Hebrews 3:1-6, NIV)

The message here is clear: Jesus is superior to Moses in every way. While Moses was faithful as a servant in the house of God, Jesus is not merely a servant; He is the Son, the builder of God’s house. Jesus is the fulfillment of everything Moses pointed toward. Moses could only serve in the house, but Jesus is the King of that house.

When we reflect on this, it’s important to understand the power of Jesus’ sacrifice and the way He fulfills the promises made to Israel. John 3:17 tells us, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” This is a clear demonstration of Jesus’ mission to bring salvation, something that Moses, though a great leader, could never accomplish. Jesus made the way for us, offering the ultimate redemption.

Even Moses’ own brother, Aaron, was the high priest, yet Jesus’ role as our eternal High Priest surpasses all. Moses, though instrumental in God’s plan, did not fulfill the ultimate promise of salvation—only Jesus could. Moses was a servant in the house of God, but Jesus is the King and the Builder of that house.

The “house” referenced in Hebrews refers to the house of God, which is the body of believers, the church. In 1 Corinthians 6:19, we are reminded that “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” Jesus, as the Son over God’s house, now dwells within us through the Holy Spirit. This is why our bodies are considered the temple of God—through Christ’s sacrifice, we are made holy and set apart.

Moses may have led God’s people through the wilderness, but Jesus led us through the ultimate wilderness of sin and death, opening the way to eternal life. 2 Samuel 7:12-16 speaks of God’s promise to David:

“When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” This promise was fulfilled in Jesus, the Son of David, the true King who reigns forever.

Genesis 12:1-3 also points to Jesus, where God promises Abraham, “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Jesus is the fulfillment of this promise, as through Him, all nations are blessed with the opportunity for salvation.

In all of this, we see that Moses served God faithfully, but it is through Jesus that we find complete restoration and salvation. Jesus is the fulfillment of everything Moses and the prophets pointed toward. In the eyes of God, we are seen as pure because of the blood of Jesus shed on the cross. Through Jesus, we have an advocate, an intercessor, and a Savior. Moses was a servant in God’s house, but Jesus is the King who made a way for us to enter into that house.

In conclusion, while Moses was a great leader and servant in God’s house, it is Jesus who has made the way for us to become partakers of the heavenly calling. We are no longer bound by the law but are set free through Christ’s sacrifice. Moses pointed to Jesus, but it is Jesus who fulfills the promises made to God’s people. We are now part of the house of God, through Jesus Christ, who is the Builder and the Son over the house.
